This Wallpaper is no Wallflower
If you know me, you know that I love flowers in all forms (I mean, who doesn’t love flowers?!).
When designing for my clients, I strive to create spaces that are timeless celebrations of home–spaces that exude soulful personality, modern freshness, and livable elegance. Fortunately for me, flowers fit that bill more often than not!
Flower Power Forever
I’m actually starting to think the interior design industry must be taking notice of our passion for flowers (and all things botanical) because floral and botanical-inspired wallpapers and fabrics are sprouting up everywhere. Of course, botanical-inspired wallpapers have been around since the early 1700s, and wallpaper patterns popular in the 1800s continue to be reproduced today. So what makes today’s floral wallpaper designs unique?
Today’s floral pattern wallpaper designs are over-scaled. While patterns range from vibrantly dramatic to softly subtle, the trend seems to be that bigger is better. A perfect example of this movement is the wallpaper design, LoveLife, created by former Houston florist, Ashley Woodson Bailey. Using her self-taught photography skills to capture the intricacies of a flower, Ashley creates striking compositions full of stunning color combinations and detail. Her designs (which you can see more of at www.awblove.com) certainly evoke the drama and color popular in wallpapers today.
Scaled Up Florals
In fact, Ashley even created a wallpaper for the talented floral designer, Ariella Chezar, whom she met at Detroit Flower Week. The paper, aptly named Ariella Green, features delightfully oversized peonies in a timeless pink and green color palette. How lovely this would be in a San Antonio home filled with natural light and historic charm!
In The Words Of A Wallpaper Guru
I spoke with George Venson, owner of Voutsa, a chic wallpaper and fabric manufacturer in New York, and he graciously shared his thoughts with me on the resurgence of floral wallcoverings and fabrics.
Venson explains that, “Rather than satisfying a trend, I think florals are making a comeback kind of ‘post-everything-being-done-once.’ We went through minimalism, we had the whole ‘maker’ and ‘artisanal Brooklyn’ decade….and what lives through it… is a kind of total history thing. The way florals relate to an audience can be very personal but also they have a color story, style, pizzazz, they can remind us of the generation that has since passed, homes from the ‘20s, ‘30s, French Art Deco or vacations to exotic hotels, or even the seventies. Florals are quite universal and lasting.”
Venson goes on to say, “One thing is for sure, a great floral is a great floral.” I couldn’t have said it better nor could I agree more!
Here are a few of my floral favorites:
What a refreshingly beautiful way to enliven a space, don’t you think?!
